3 Benefits Of Organic Food For Your Health
For many people, the most important of the benefits of organic food is better health. Here are 3 main reasons why organic food is better for you:
1. Organic foods are free of agrochemical residues. These chemicals cause health problems for many people. They’re sometimes the cause of unidentified food allergies. Pesticides can contain heavy metals and other toxins that accumulate in body, eventually causing health problems such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.
2. Organic foods are also free of artificial additives and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). They aren’t irradiated – a treatment used to kill off any germs to increase shelf life of foods. Organically grown fruits and vegetables keep better than chemically grown ones without needing such questionable treatments.
3. Organically grown foods are higher in nutrients. The
Organic Trade Association (OTA)
lists many studies that have shown organic vegetables, fruits and other produce to have higher levels of nutrients.
One study showed that ‘organic foods contain, on average, 25 percent higher concentration of 11 nutrients than their conventional counterparts.’
If minerals aren’t in the soil, they won’t be in the vegetables grown in that soil, or in the meat of animals reared on it. With chemical farming, farmers have relied for many years on artificial fertilizers that use only four chemicals to promote rapid growth of plants. The result is that all the other minerals and trace elements, essential for real health, have gradually got used up.
Organic farmers aim to build up the health of the soil and replace all the lost minerals through composting, green manures and crop rotation. These traditional practises have worked for thousands of years throughout the world, sustaining a growing population. Chemical farming has been in use for 2 or 3 generations and has only survived because of huge government subsidies.
Many people find that organic food tastes better. This is directly because it has more nutrients – it’s the vitamins and minerals that give food its flavor.
As well as being good for you, there are benefits of organic food for the environment – organic farms don’t pollute the air, soil or water with agrochemicals. This means cleaner air for you and your children to breathe, cleaner water to drink.
Organic farmers encourage the health of the soil and biodiversity of animal and plant life. At a time when so many species are in danger of extinction, this can only be good.
For me, one of the most important benefits of organic food is that farm animals are properly looked after. If I’m going to eat meat, I want to know that the animal has led a happy, healthy life. The way animals are treated on modern intensive farms can be shockingly cruel.
This applies to eggs as well – compare free-range hens to caged birds (hens must be free range for their eggs to class as organic).
Caged birds live horrible lives.
Any processed food with any form of chicken or egg in it is likely to come from battery hens unless it says free range. This includes things like mayonnaise. I always read labels carefully - I don’t want to be involved in supporting factory farming of hens in any way, even accidentally.
There are so many benefits of organic food – it’s better for you, better for the land, better for wildlife, better for farm animals. It’s the only sustainable way for the future.
