As well as avoiding yeasty foods, there are other things you can take that actively discourage candida growth, as part of the candida cure. This includes foods such as onion and garlic, as well as natural candida remedies.
The list of foods you have to avoid with a candida cure is long, and seems to leave very little that you can eat. But there are still plenty of foods you can eat, and they tend to be the healthier ones, so that getting rid of your yeast infection could improve your health in lots of ways. (Including weight loss if you're overweight.)
You’ll find it well worth the effort to give up some foods, at least for a while. You will very quickly find relief from the symptoms of yeast candida overgrowth. And you might well find that the candida cure clears up some symptoms
that you hadn’t realised were connected to the yeast.
For a yeast cure, the foods that you need to avoid on an anti-candida diet include (1) any foods containing yeast, (2) any foods using yeast in their production, (3) foods on which yeast might grow in storage and (4) foods that encourage the growth of yeast in your body.
(1) First - avoid all forms of bread and baked goods with yeast in. Look out for hidden sources of bread – food coated in breadcrumbs for instance, and meat products containing bread or rusk.
This includes most sausages, burghers, possibly meat pies. Though bread uses a different type of yeast from candida, any yeast will make your condition worse.
With a candida cure you might find it very hard giving up bread – it’s such a convenient food. But you’ll soon find the benefits of giving up bread are well worth it. Anyway, you can eat soda bread instead, and it’s very easy to make.
(2) Foods that use yeast in their production include all fermented foods - vinegar and anything containing vinegar (mayonnaise, pickles and chutneys for instance), fermented (alcoholic) drinks, malt and malt extract. Soy sauce, tofu and miso are traditional Chinese foods, which are also produced by fermentation. All these things are produced by the action of yeast and you must avoid them with the candida cure.
Though brewer’s yeast is not the same as candida, like baker’s yeast it makes things worse. Unfortunately, cheese also comes under the heading of foods produced by the action of yeast, so no cheeses of any sort I’m afraid, for a while at least.
Some vitamins are produced from yeasts, particularly B vitamins. Avoid these and any foods that are fortified with these vitamins. Processed breakfast cereals contain sugar and malt extract, as well as added vitamins which are likely to come from yeast. Malt extract is made by the action of yeast, and sugar encourages yeast growth.
Mushrooms of any sort are out – because they are fungus, like baker’s yeast and brewer’s yeast, they need to be avoided. For a candida cure, you need to avoid all forms of fungus and mould, including any type of yeast. When you're finding it hard to give up so much stuff, remember it's not forever, just till your gut flora is back to normal - not much yeast, and plenty of good bacteria to keep it in check.
(3) Foods on which yeast is likely to grow include dried fruit, nuts and seeds – in fact anything that has been stored at all, even the outside of fresh fruit, and fruit juices. Citrus fruits are particularly susceptible to mould. Also things like flour that's been around for a long time - check the dates on stuff in your store cupboard regularly.
(4) Lastly, for a complete candida cure you will need to avoid foods that feed the yeast organisms inside you. What they love most is sugar, so you'll need to avoid sugar in any form – white sugar, brown sugar, honey, syrup, treacle, etc. Sorry, no chocolate for the time being.
(If you have ever made bread at home, you know that you have to add sugar to feed the yeast, in order for the bread to rise.)
Even fresh fruit has sugar, so don’t eat too much fruit. Also avoid refined carbohydrates – yeasts feed on these almost as readily as on sugar. Even wholegrain carbohydrates need to be limited.
for yeast infection is not a starvation diet. You only want the yeast to starve – not you! What you do eat is just as much part of the cure as what you have to avoid. Starving the yeast is only the beginning – you also need to make your body healthier, so that yeasts can’t thrive in it.
Yeast thrives in an oxygen-poor, acidic environment. This is why bakers add vinegar or vitamin C (ascorbic acid) to bread dough.

body less acidic
through diet. This is a vitally important part of the yeast infections cure. In fact, if your blood pH is right, no bugs will survive in it long enough to make you ill.
- Exercise will improve oxygenation of your body, by increasing circulation, and encouraging deep breathing.
Foods that will help to clear a yeast infection include almost all vegetables. Onions and garlic are especially good as they actively discourage fungus and other parasites. Starchy vegetables such as potatoes, beans, sweet corn and sweet potatoes should be eaten in moderation. You might find you're better off avoiding all grains for a while - some people do. Others can have moderate amounts of whole grains and still get rid of the yeast infection.
(By grains I mean wheat, oats, rice etc, and anything made from them - so anything made from any type of flour. Not only could these feed the yeast already inside you - they often have yeast growing on them.)
Meat, fish and eggs are fine in moderation. Remember that protein foods are acidifying – so have plenty of alkalising vegetables with them. It’s better to eat organically produced meat as otherwise it may contain traces of antibiotics.
Unless you've got a milk allergy, yoghurt is a useful food to have – as long as it’s live, natural yoghurt. Live yoghurt will help to replenish the good bacteria in your gut, and get your digestion working properly again. If you can’t have milk, you can get dairy free probiotics supplements from a good health store.
Coconut oil has a natural anti-microbial action, which make it a useful addition to the diet for a natural candida cure. It can be used for all cooking - unlike other fats and oils, it isn't damaged by heating. You can also use it as a substitute for butter.
Raw fruits and vegetables are useful because of the digestive enzymes that they contain (these are destroyed in cooking). Sprouted beans and seeds are specially good sources of digestive enzymes. Do remember not to eat too much cold food in cold weather, but have hot food as well.
The two things you will probably find hardest to give up are sugar and bread. Sugar is perhaps the hardest of all – it is highly addictive. Giving up sugar is a vital part of the candida cure. Once you’ve avoided it for a few days the addiction will be less - and you'll start to notice the natural sweetness of many foods.
If you miss bread, soda bread
is very quick and easy to make. Though it’s rather crumbly, at least you can have your piece of toast for breakfast. Rice and pasta are o.k, but use wholemeal if you can. Try to cut down on carbohydrates from grains - fill up on vegetables instead.
Candida remedies include natural anti-fungals such as tea-tree oil and other essential oils. These can be used diluted in your bath or in massage oils. Echinacea tea will boost your immune system. Cinnamon is another natural anti-fungal that can be used in cooking, made into cinnamon tea - or just chew on a piece of cinnamon. My older girls and I enjoy this - just break off a small piece of a cinnamon quill. The taste is lovely, much fresher than the powdered form.
drink can be a helpful part of the candida cure. Your liver works hard to clean up the toxins produced by the yeasts – which include alcohol – so it makes sense to look after your liver.
The yeast is not going to give up without a fight – when you're craving a food that you know you shouldn’t have, remember that it’s really the yeast that wants it, not you. I know it sounds funny, but yeast really does cause carbohydrate cravings. It also weakens your immune system so that it’s harder to get rid of it.
It takes determination to achieve a complete candida cure, but it’s so worth it – you’ll feel better in so many ways when you’re not supporting a colony of yeast anymore.
