This essential oil is particularly good for treating colds because it kills the germs in your nose and throat as well as clearing your blocked nose. It is one of the main ingredients in mixtures sold for clearing a stuffy head, such as Olbas Oil.
To use eucalyptus oil to clear your head, put a few drops in a bowl of hot water. Put your face over the bowl, with a towel over your head and breathe in the steam for a few minutes. Or you can put a couple of drops of the oil on a tissue or handkerchief and hold it near you to breathe in the smell.
If someone in your family has an infectious illness, you can use eucalyptus oil as a natural remedy to help the sick person, and also to help to stop the infection spreading to others in the house. Use it in an oil burner near the sick person’s bed.

Eucalyptus essential oil is a powerful disinfectant, which works against bacteria, viruses and moulds. In fact, it is often used in commercial disinfectants. If you prefer to make your own household cleaners and disinfectants, eucalyptus oil is a useful ingredient.
Eucalyptus oil is also a good insect repellent. You can use it in a spray or in an oil burner to keep insects out of a room in summer. Use it diluted on your skin to protect from mosquitoes, and on pets as a natural flea remedy. Remember with home remedies for fleas, as with any flea remedy, to treat the animal’s bedding as well.
Essential oil combinations are even more effective than individual oils. Eucalyptus works well with bergamot, geranium and lavender oil as a natural home remedy for head lice. Use a few drops of each in a little sunflower oil and massage into the scalp. Leave for an hour or two before shampooing, then comb through with a fine comb. This is much safer for your children – and you - than the strong poisons sold commercially for treating lice infestations. For getting rid of head lice completely, you need to comb every day with a fine-tooth comb, as well as using essential oils to prevent re-infestation
Always dilute eucalyptus essential oil for use on your skin - like most essential oils, it is too strong to use undiluted and may cause burning. Just mix a few drops of the essential oil with a spoonful of ordinary cooking oil such as sunflower oil. For more information on eucalyptus essential oil, and other essential oils, visit
