Vitamin C is the Natural and only Heart Disease Cure.

The evidence for vitamin C as both heart disease cure and prevention comes from many scientific studies. Doctors in many countries have studied the effect of vitamin C intake on 1000s of patients, sometimes over many years.

Don’t just take my word for it – look at the evidence:

Over half a century ago Dr G.C. Willis of Canada studied the effects of vitamin C supplementation on atherosclerotic deposits. Half of his patients received 1.5g per day of vitamin C; the others had no additional vitamin C. After 10-12 months atherosclerotic deposits had decreased in 30% of the patients on vitamin C supplements, whereas in the patients who were not taking vitamin C supplements the deposits had either remained the same or got worse. (Willis GC, Light AW, Gow WS. 1954. ‘Serial arteriography in atherosclerosis’. Canadian Medical Association Journal 71:562-568.)

Dr James Enstrom of the University of California investigated the vitamin C intake of 11000 people over a 10-year period. This study showed that those whose intake of vitamin C was at least 300mg a day, either through food or supplements, compared to the average intake of 50mg, reduced their risk of heart disease by up to 50% (men) and 40% (women). It also showed an increased life expectancy of up to 6 years for those with a higher intake of vitamin C. (Enstrom JE, Kanim LE, Klein MA. 1992. ‘Vitamin C intake and mortality among a sample of the United States population’. Epidemiology 3:194-202.)

Professor K.F. Gey of the University of Berne in Switzerland compared the rate of blood levels of vitamins (including vitamin C and beta-carotene), blood levels of cholesterol and rates of cardiovascular disease in northern European and southern European people. He found that cardiovascular disease rates were higher in northern European countries where vitamin intake is low, and lower in southern Europe where the diet is much richer in vitamins. He also found that getting enough vitamins C, E and A has a much greater impact on the risk of heart disease than reducing cholesterol in the diet. (Gey KF, Stahelin HB, Puska P, Evans A. 1987. 'Relationship of plasma level of vitamin C to mortality from ischemic heart disease'. Ann NY Acad Sci 498:277-291; Gey KF, Puska P,Jordan P, Moser UK. 1991.'Inverse correlation between plasma vitamin E and mortality from ischemic heart disease in cross-cultural epidemiology' American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 53:326, Supplement.)

The Nurses’ Health Study of more than 87 000 American nurses aged 34-59 showed that taking more than 200ius a day of vitamin E (compared with taking only 3ius – the dietary average) reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 34%. (1993)

The Health Professional Study of more than 39 000 health professionals aged 40-75 showed that taking 400ius a day of vitamin E reduces the risk of heart disease by 40% (compared with taking only 6ius). It also showed that beta-carotene significantly reduces the risk of heart disease.

Dr Charles Hennekens studied more than 22 000 physicians aged 40-84, with existing cardiovascular disease. He showed that for patients who already have a heart condition, 50mg a day of beta-carotene (vitamin A) could reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke by 50%. (1992)

The Cambridge Heart Antioxidant Study patients with atherosclerosis were given 400ius or 800ius of vitamin E, or a placebo. Those on vitamin E supplements had 47% fewer heart attacks than those on the placebo.

In Japan a 20-year study of over 2000 patients showed that optimum vitamin C intake was the single most important factor in preventing strokes. (2000)

Dr Sudhir Kurl of the University of Kuopio, Finland conducted a study of more than 2400 overweight patients who had high blood pressure. It was shown that low levels of vitamin C made the risk of a stroke three times greater. (2002)

All these studies show conclusively that the secret to avoiding or curing cardiovascular disease is to supplement your diet with vitamins, most importantly vitamin C, but also vitamins A and E.

The studies mentioned range from 6 years old to over half a century. Yet still today doctors are treating heart disease with artificial chemicals designed to block symptoms and which often have serious side effects, rather than look at the cause of the problem. Yes, there is talk about the benefits of exercise, giving up smoking and even of eating healthily. But how many doctors actually treat heart disease with vitamin C? Why do they use beta-blockers, and all the other drugs instead of something that really works? The sad truth is, it comes down to money – the drugs make millions for the big drug companies, far more than they could make selling vitamin C. And the drug companies have a large say in how doctors are trained.

You need supplements to get enough vitamin C, but natural sources are important too. Fresh fruits and vegetables have lots of different nutrients, and fibre too. Check out this super Vitamin C rich salad recipe.
