A Natural Cure For Depression - Could Work Be The Answer?
A natural cure for depression is keeping busy. You may feel depressed particularly on Sundays when there is less to do.
The well-known psychologist Viktor Frankl – author of Man’s Search For Meaning – wrote much about depression. He talked about “Sunday Neurosis, that kind of depression which afflicts people who become aware of the lack of content in their lives when the rush of the busy week is over and the void within themselves becomes manifest.” [Man’s Search For Meaning, page 109]
Sudarto speaks of a natural solution by explaining how work can direct our attention out into the world and hence bring balance back into our lives.
“Your work is the means by which your passions – through the heart and mind – are directed outwardly, not inwardly. When they are busy with the work in the world, the heart and mind do not interfere with the inner development going on - so it progresses smoothly.” [Sudarto Martohudojo – Subud World News Feb.1972.]
Keeping your heart and mind – your thoughts and imagination – busy, means that you don’t dwell on ideas that make you unhappy. The satisfaction of completing a day’s work goes a long way to countering feelings of depression.
How much better if the work you do is really suited to you? If what you do is what you really love?
My father used to vent his frustration onto my mother regularly every weekend. I couldn’t bear to hear them argue. What society told him was a good job, did not suit him at all. He was more a practical man – carpentry may have suited him better – not working in an office. But for him it was a “cleaner” job.
Remember The Day You Said NO To Depression?
Have you a story to tell about how you - or a friend - coped with depression? Did moving jobs/careers change your life? Or was it something else that lifted you out of the trap of depression? Sharing your story could help someone else to find their way back to happiness.
