Your skin is not just a covering for your body. It plays an active role in clearing out toxins and wastes. Spots and rashes are a sign that your skin is working overtime. There are two things you can do to keep your skin clear:
· Drink lots of water. This will help to flush out your system so there’s less for your skin to do.
· Don’t put in toxins in the first place. That means being careful what you eat. Avoid artificial additives and cut right down on sugar and greasy foods.
Drinking lots of water will also help to moisturise your skin from the inside and reduce wrinkles. Though it is so simple, this is probably the most important of the natural health beauty tips. Drinking lots of water has many benefits for your overall health as well as your looks.

Keeping your skin clean is important. Clean skin looks better, and can breath better, keeping it healthy. (Yes, your skin does breath.) Many cleansing products contain harmful chemicals. There are too many to go into details here. Some of them can do permanent harm to your skin, and many are carcinogenic. Choose products based on natural ingredients. Pure soap is available from health stores and from small-scale, independent manufacturers. Or you can make your own cleaning products. Your kitchen is a good place to start – many natural health beauty tips are based on foods!
· Oatmeal makes a great skin scrub. Simply wet a handful of oatmeal with cold water and scrub your skin with it. Rinse off with plain water. This natural health beauty tip leaves your skin lovely and soft. (You can make your own oatmeal from porridge oats in a few seconds with a food processor.) You can use oat bran for rougher areas of skin such as heels and elbows.
· You don’t need to use expensive cold cream to remove makeup. Ordinary cooking oil will do. Simply massage a little olive oil or sunflower oil gently into your skin and wipe with cotton wool. The make-up will come off, and your skin will be moisturised at the same time.
· Lemons are brilliant for cleaning stains and smells off your hands. They also help restore the natural acidity of your skin. My mother always seems to have a half lemon by her kitchen sink to rub onto her hands.
The kitchen has other treats for your skin:
· Cucumber is a well-known remedy for reducing wrinkles around the eyes. Simply lay a thin slice of cucumber on each eyelid for a few minutes.
· If you have strawberries, don’t throw away the overripe ones – these are the best for your skin. Squash them onto your face and rub them in. Leave for ten minutes then wash off with cool water. Strawberries, like cucumber, are astringent and will tighten your skin, reducing wrinkles.
· Warm camomile teabags are very soothing for tired eyes. Make yourself a relaxing cup of camomile, squeeze out the teabag and, as soon as it’s not too hot, place it over your eyelid.

Hair is also an important part of your beauty, your crowning glory. I have natural health beauty tips for hair.
· Protect your hair’s natural condition by not washing too often. For long hair, concentrate on washing your scalp and the roots of your hair. This is where the oil is. Then condition the ends, where the hair can get too dry.
· Brushing your hair with a natural bristle brush will massage your scalp, and spread the natural oils to the ends of the hair.
· Use shampoos based on natural ingredients – the detergents in most shampoos are very harsh. Even those labelled ‘mild’ actually contain very strong detergents. Choose from the brands sold in health food shops.
. If your garden is plagued with horsetail fern - make the most of it. A cup of horsetail tea a day will strengthen hair and nails because of its high silica content. Or use the tea as a rince for your hair.
· For a natural conditioning treatment, massage olive oil into your hair. Wrap it up in a warm towel (you can use a shower cap to protect the towel). Leave it for an hour before washing your hair. An Indian friend of mine used to condition her glossy, waist-length hair like this every week.
· Use an egg for a conditioning wash: separate the yolk and white. Beat the white till it’s stiff. Beat the yolk, and then fold it into the white. Massage this mixture into your hair. Leave it for ten minutes or so before washing it out with cool to lukewarm water. This egg shampoo will feed and clean your hair. Warning: don’t try to use hot water to wash out the egg as it will cook and be very difficult to get rid of!
· Hair dryers, heated curling or straightening irons, chlorine in swimming pools, strong sun and chemical dyes and bleaches, can all easily damage hair. Be careful to protect your hair and limit it’s exposure to these.
It can be fun to take care of your hair and skin with simple ingredients that you prepare for yourself. With these natural health beauty tips you can keep your hair and skin looking their best, naturally.
