Aug 20, 2010, Build A Healthy Immune System With The Forgotten Vitamin.
We all know that vitamin C is important for our immune systems, but did you know that vitamin D is also vital for strong immunity?
My personal immune system measure is a gumboil which flares up if I don’t have enough vitamin C, eat more than a tiny bit of sugar or don’t get enough sleep.
It’s been quite big the last few days, in spite of lots of vitamin C. But yesterday I had some cod liver oil in the evening and this morning the gumboil has almost completely gone!
Cod liver oil is of course the traditional vitamin D supplement. A few decades ago all mothers in England dosed their children with it on a daily basis – not for it’s immune function, but because of it’s role in growing healthy, strong bones and teeth - Vitamin D is needed for calcium absorption.
Of course at this time of year your body manufactures it’s own vitamin D from the action of sunshine on your skin, so get outdoors and enjoy the summer – but be sensible. If the sun is very strong, stay in the shade at the hottest time of day.
If you don’t get much chance to be out in the sunshine, it makes sense to take vitamin D supplements in some form.
Nowadays krill oil is recommended as the best source. It’s rich in vitamin D and, being lower down the food chain, is less likely to be contaminated with pollutants. (The higher up the food chain, the more pollutants are concentrated in an animal, from all the other animals they eat.)
I must say that I don’t like the taste of cod liver oil – I think I’ll get capsules next time.

Apr 26, 2010, Spring Has Sprung
'Spring has sprung,
The grass is riz.
I wonder where the birdies is?'
Actually, there are dozens of birds all around, though I haven't seen a housemartin or a swallow yet, nor heard a cuckoo. All the same, spring is here, and I’m trying to get my garden in order. I’m not very good at neat rows of vegetables, but I try to grow at least some of our own food – especially beans and salad greens. You can’t beat home grown produce for freshness and taste.
Also, many of the wild herbs and 'weeds' which grow so fast at this time of year are wonderful spring tonics, whether they're added to salads or drunk as herb teas. And of course the warmer weather means you can get out and enjoy the sun more - boosting your vitamin D intake. This is vital for a healthy immune system as well as for strong bones and teeth.

Dec 25, 2009, Happy Christmas, everyone.
Whatever your views on Christmas, chances are that Christmas day is the day when you’re most likely to over-indulge. If you’re feeling uncomfortably full after a big Christmas dinner, maybe even a bit sick or headachy, here are some simple remedies for quick relief.
A taste of something salty and sour can be an instant antidote to an excess of sweet and fatty foods. The best is Japanese umeboshi plum paste. This is very salty, very sour – the tiniest taste is sometimes enough to stop a headache in it’s tracks, when the headache is because of too much rich food. Any salty, sour food will help – olives are good – or just have a pinch of salt with a drop of lemon juice or vinegar. You only need a small taste.
Something I’ve always found helpful after eating too much is a spoonful of live yoghurt. The good bacteria in the yoghurt help to digest the food, acting as reinforcements for the overworked bacteria in your gut.
If you often suffer from heartburn after a big meal, try to drink at least two large glasses of plain water in the half hour before eating. If you still have trouble, sip another glassful after the meal. Digestion uses a lot of water, and dehydration is the commonest cause of heartburn.
If you're likely to have more alcohol than is good for you, remember to drink lots of water to keep hydrated, dilute the alcohol and help to flush it out of your system.
Dec 24, 2009, The Link Between Heart Disease And Gum Disease
I read recently that people with gum disease are four times as likely to develop heart disease as those without. The orthodox reaction to this is to say that gum disease must somehow cause heart disease – the germs get into the blood and weaken the heart muscles.
There might be some truth in that, but when I studied Statistics we were taught that a strong correlation between two factors doesn’t prove that one causes the other. There may be a third factor that causes both.
Isn’t it much more likely that both gum disease and heart disease are caused by vitamin C deficiency? I’ve explained before about the link between vitamin C and heart disease – a link that has been proved beyond doubt many times over. (Have a look at the work of Doctors Matthias Rath, Linus Pauling, James Enstrom and G.C. Willis.)
As for vitamin C and gum disease, aren’t inflammation and bleeding of gums the most obvious and well-known signs of scurvy? And everyone knows that scurvy is caused by lack of vitamin C.
Vitamin C supplements are my health insurance. By taking 2 or 3 grams of vitamin C every day, I plan to avoid heart disease and gum disease. I also don’t get colds and rarely get any infections – a better side effect than most medicines offer!
