Smoking is a known or probable cause of approximately 25 different diseases, and aggravates many others.

Cigarette smoke contains about 4,000 different chemicals that can damage cells and body systems. These include at least 80 carcinogens, the addictive nicotine and hundreds of other poisons such as cyanide, carbon monoxide and ammonia. 

I remember my mother telling me she smoked a few times ‘just to be sociable’. That was decades ago. Now, most people would consider smoking anti-social.

The message is slowly spreading that smoking is unhealthy.

You don’t have to go that way. Just keep moving and eat well.

So, what are you making your body from? What are you going to eat today that will be part of you for the next few days, months and years?

Will you choose good quality, nutrient-rich foods? Or junk food, empty of real nutrients, high in sugar, cheap fats, agrochemical residues and artificial additives?

I’m asking you to &lt;strong&gt;think carefully about every meal&lt;/strong&gt; you eat, every snack. Because it will be part of you for a long time.

This was in a newsletter from our local high school. We would all be wise to take notice. Teachers are in a prime position to notice the immediate effects on behaviour of what children eat and drink for lunch.

‘Energy drinks’ have very high levels of caffeine, equivalent to drinking large quantities of strong coffee. They’re also high in sugar, or else have artificial sweeteners. 

Many state that they are ‘not suitable for children’ on the label – which is certainly an understatement! I would say these drinks aren’t suitable for anyone. 

If children can’t stay awake at school in the afternoons, perhaps they should turn off their TVs and computers rather earlier in the evenings?

Even for adults these energy drinks are very unhealthy. Caffeine is a toxin and very bad for your liver. Sugar we all know is bad, and artificial sweeteners are worse.

Do you ever really need resort to caffeine to keep yourself awake? A better answer is surely to get more sleep. A short midday nap is often enough to revive you for the afternoon. Lying with feet up higher than your heart is particularly effective. 

If you want a quick pick-me-up, a piece of fruit or fresh fruit juice will give you quick energy. Raw vegetable juice is great – rich in easily absorbed nutrients. Peppermint tea is a natural stimulant without side effects.

Or perhaps plain water is what you need. A lot of the time, afternoon tiredness is down to dehydration.</description>

Type 1 Diabetes is seen as an autoimmune disease, where the body’s own immune system destroys the pancreatic cells that produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes is associated with diet and lifestyle, where one’s cells become insulin resistant due to years of poor diet with too much sugar and refined starches.

Diabetes is usually seen as a permanent condition that needs to be managed through diet and medication. Diabetes sufferers expect a lifetime routine of daily injections of insulin and blood tests several times a day. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

The director general of the World Health Organisation, Dr Margaret Chan, said: &quot;The world is heading towards a post-antibiotic era in which many common infections will no longer have a cure and, once again, kill unabated.&quot;

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control estimated, in 2009, that &lt;strong&gt;each year 25,000 Europeans die as a direct consequence of a drug-resistant infection.&lt;/strong&gt; 

The many outbreaks of MRSA in hospitals are just one example of this.

While overuse of antibiotics in the past has sped up the process of bacteria developing resistance to them, it would have happened anyway – bacteria are pretty good at adapting.

The thing is, is it such a disaster that antibiotics might soon be finished? Using the clay was a bit messy and awkward. I spread the wet clay on my knee, put a piece of gauze over it and covered the whole area with a plastic bag, tied on with a bandage wrapped round and round. Altogether a lot of hassle.

I’m sure the healing clays are very good, but I like &lt;strong&gt;remedies that are simple and easy to use. &lt;/strong&gt;

What I’ve found that seems to be really helping, and is incredibly easy to use, is magnets. I had some &lt;strong&gt;tiny magnets on self-adhesive patches&lt;/strong&gt;, and tried one on my knee. The patch lasted several days – even through the shower – and my knee definitely felt better.

The first patch eventually lost it’s stickiness and I’ve now put two on, one each side of my knee. It’s certainly much less messy than the clay.

&lt;strong&gt;Magnets have been used in healing for thousands of years&lt;/strong&gt;, but only recently have scientists worked that they work by stimulating the blood circulation in the area affected by the magnetic field.

If you want to try healing magnets for an injury, there are several suppliers on-line. Many stock magnetic bracelets and other forms of magnet for wearing on particular joints or for sleeping on. The mechanical view of anatomy is outdated, but some analogies still hold. Our bodies are designed to run on certain ‘fuels’. What happens when we put the wrong fuel in our bodies? We may not notice anything wrong at first – we can cope with a poor diet for a time – but eventually things start to go wrong, and it could take much more than a day at the ‘mechanic’s’ to put it right again.

&lt;strong&gt;Avoid illness by learning what ‘fuel’ your body wants&lt;/strong&gt; and giving it only that. You need clean water and oxygen. You need complex carbohydrates for energy. You need a selection of vitamins, minerals, and essential oils to keep everything running smoothly. You need a certain amount of protein for ongoing repairs (and growth for children). You need fibre to keep your digestion working properly.

Most of these are found in vegetables. Fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains and animal proteins supply some nutrients too. 

Some people manage very well without any animal protein, others don’t. Many are better off without grains.

Sugar, refined white flour, processed foods and artificial additives don’t give us any useful nutrients. They’re hard work for our bodies to deal with. If eating these ‘foods’ is a substitute for eating real, nutrient rich food, then we’re really in trouble.

Most of the illnesses that plague modern society are caused by years of giving our bodies the wrong ‘fuel’. No amount of drugs or surgery will fix that.

To get well again, you have to stop filling your body with rubbish and give it what it really needs. 

If you always &lt;strong&gt;eat just what your body needs&lt;/strong&gt;, there’s no reason why you should ever get ill.</description>

It seems that larger companies are particularly guilty of not disclosing potentially dangerous ingredients, while some smaller companies specifically produce gluten free products.

It may not seem very important what goes into cosmetics, but anything you put on your skin will be absorbed into your blood stream, reaching your internal organs in only 20 minutes. For people with celiac disease, this means that their symptoms can be aggravated and they won’t know why. This is what happened to one woman in particular, who found that her symptoms improved when she stopped using certain cosmetics. This is partly what sparked off the recent research.
 
As the study points out, most companies don’t reveal all the ingredients. If you think you have had a reaction to any cosmetics or personal care products – stop using the ones you suspect. Write to the manufacturers and ask them for a full list of ingredients.

Remember there are companies producing cosmetics that are gluten free and really contain only natural ingredients.

Celiac disease is becoming increasingly common, affecting nearly 1 in 100 people. Many people suffer the symptoms for years before being diagnosed. Once diagnosed it’s a matter of keeping to a &lt;a href=http://www.natural-health-for-you.com/gluten-free-diet.html target=“_blank”&gt; gluten free diet &lt;/a&gt; and one shouldn’t have any more trouble – provided you aren’t accidentally exposed to gluten in cosmetics!

I remember as a child in London, England having &lt;strong&gt;‘gold top’&lt;/strong&gt; which was unhomogenised milk, with the thick yellow cream at the top. Then there was &lt;strong&gt;‘green top’&lt;/strong&gt; which was unpasteurised. 

Nowadays it’s hard to get hold of the unpasteurised (raw) milk. With the modern obsession with germs it’s not considered safe to eat anything that hasn’t had all the life boiled out of it.

In fact &lt;strong&gt;raw milk contains enzymes&lt;/strong&gt; and other agents &lt;strong&gt;that inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. &lt;/strong&gt; These are destroyed by heat so that pasteurised milk actually goes off more easily than raw milk.

Actually, given the way most dairy cows are kept, it probably isn’t safe to drink their milk, raw or not. Bred to produce an unnatural amount of milk, fed on high protein diets and hormones to make them produce even more milk, and given antibiotics routinely in an attempt to keep them from getting too ill, how can they produce anything that’s fit to drink?

And then it’s processed to remove what little goodness there might have been in it.  Pasteurised milk contains no digestive enzymes, its proteins have been denatured and the calcium has become insoluble – and therefore your body can’t absorb it any more than the calcium in chalk.

Homogenisation denatures it even further - breaking up the fat globules till they’re so fine they can’t separate out of the milk. These tiny particles of fat have been linked to high cholesterol levels in those who drink homogenised milk.

It’s not surprising that there are growing numbers of people with milk allergies.

By contrast, raw milk from grass-fed cows is a natural food, rich in protein, absorbable calcium, vitamins and digestive enzymes. With modern, hygienic milking and bottling methods it’s highly unlikely to have any nasty germs in it.

We all like to smell fresh, but there are healthier ways than resorting to these questionable products. 

The first step is to understand that &lt;strong&gt;fresh sweat doesn’t smell. &lt;/strong&gt; It’s the action of &lt;strong&gt;bacteria&lt;/strong&gt; on the sweat that &lt;strong&gt;causes the smell. &lt;/strong&gt; So to avoid being unsociably smelly, you can simply wash the sweat off while it’s fresh.

If it’s not possible to have a wash soon enough, there are several natural ways to prevent growth of bacteria.

&lt;ul&gt; &lt;li&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Bicarb of soda&lt;/strong&gt; is too alkaline for bacteria to thrive. Make a paste of bicarb of soda (baking soda) with a little water and rub into your armpits.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Coconut oil&lt;/strong&gt; is effective against bacteria. Simply rub a little into your armpits after a wash and you’ll smell fresh all day – though slightly coconutty. You only need a tiny bit – a little goes a long way with coconut oil.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;For a different ‘perfume’ you could use &lt;strong&gt;lemon juice &lt;/strong&gt;. The citric acid in it is anti-bacterial. After washing, rub a little fresh lemon juice into your armpit to stay sweet smelling. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;

Remember, there’s no need to poison yourself in order to smell nice.</description>

The feeling of ‘falling apart’ could be quite literally true -

Connective tissue forms a large proportion of your body. Bone is a type of connective tissue, as are cartilage, ligaments, tendons, skin and blood vessels – even blood itself, and connective tissue surrounds many organs.

&lt;strong&gt;Connective tissue is what holds you together&lt;/strong&gt;, giving your body shape and structure.
As well, it has a role to play in delivering nutrients to body cells.

So you can see how important connective tissue is.

&lt;strong&gt;Vitamin C&lt;/strong&gt; is vital to the production of connective tissue. Without sufficient vitamin C you would, quite literally, start to fall apart. All your connective tissue would weaken over time. 

Where a person gets no vitamin C at all - as in the past for case for sailors at sea for months at a time – the result is scurvy. The symptoms are feeling tired and weak all the time, feeling irritable and depressed, pain in legs and arms, bruising easily, swollen gums which bleed easily, loose teeth, shortness of breath, slow healing of wounds, internal bleeding causing severe pain in joints and blurred vision. 

Nowadays outright scurvy is rarely seen, but shortage of vitamin C is all too common. Very few people get anywhere near enough vitamin C for optimum health.

Government recommendations vary, but are around 50-100 mg/day. This is barely enough to prevent full-blown scurvy. You need a hundred times that much. For real health, you need to measure vitamin C intake in grams, not milligrams. 

Consider that amongst the great apes living in their natural environment, it’s normal for them to eat every day the equivalent, weight for weight, of a grown man having 11 grams of vitamin C. It just doesn’t make sense to think that we could be healthy on a tiny fraction of that. Most people could do with taking 6-10 grams a day – in the case of severe illness nutritionists often prescribe dosages of &lt;strong&gt;100-200 grams&lt;/strong&gt; (not milligrams)


I can’t overstate the importance of vitamin C. &lt;strong&gt;If you’re going to take only one supplement, make it high dose vitamin C. &lt;/strong&gt;  High dose vitamin C reduces the chances of heart disease and cancer, as well as colds and flu’s – and it may be just what you need to clear up that feeling of ‘falling apart’.</description>

The first is probably the usual interpretation – if you are obedient to God’s Law you will always have enough food (and whatever else you need).

Or does it mean that to be obedient you should eat the ‘good things of the land’ – the &lt;strong&gt;fruits, vegetables and grains&lt;/strong&gt; that grow in field and garden, and possibly the meat, milk and eggs of animals and birds of the land. As opposed to the processed, synthetic ‘foods’ mass-produced in factories, which fill most of the supermarket shelves.

We are each free to interpret the Bible as we choose. For me this quote is a reminder that God has given us all the food, and medicine, we need to be healthy. There is no need for any artificial additives, processed food or GMOs.

It’s commonly used for drawing out toxins, for instance in healing boils and abscesses and in facial masks to improve the complexion. It’s also affective in promoting rapid healing of injuries.

A woman I met recently had a bad break to her ankle. The doctors told her it would be in plaster for 6 months. She is a great believer in the healing power of green clay, so she used it on her ankle day and night - within a few weeks it was &lt;strong&gt;completely healed&lt;/strong&gt;, fit and strong again!

I think I’ll try the green clay on my knee. I’ll let you know how I get on – watch this space!</description>

It had too much &lt;strong&gt;salt, cheap, unhealthy fat&lt;/strong&gt; and was ‘&lt;strong&gt;often adulterated&lt;/strong&gt; with ground bones or lime powder’.

It’s no wonder that illness and disease were so widespread – many people suffered ‘wasting diseases’ due to vitamin deficiency.

In 1911 Lord Northcliffe, the founder and owner of the Daily Mail started his campaign for a ‘standard bread’, a wholemeal loaf that was good, nourishing food. Once the royal family started using wholemeal bread, it was quickly accepted by everyone. 

So now everyone eats healthy, wholemeal bread?

No - &lt;strong&gt;white bread is&lt;/strong&gt; still with us, and it’s &lt;strong&gt;worse than ever&lt;/strong&gt;.

White flour still has up to 90% of the nutrients removed, and the list of additives in bread is longer than ever – excessive salt, sugar, hydrogenated and fractionated fats, soya flour, preservatives, enzymes and various chemicals designed to make the bread fluffier, stretchier and softer, so it appears to be fresher. 

Several of &lt;strong&gt;these ingredients have been linked with eczema, asthma, gut diseases and behavioural problems&lt;/strong&gt; in children (and adults?).

White bread makes up 50% or more of the daily diet for many people. It’s hardly surprising that poor health is now normal.

On the other hand, for those who care about their health, or just like real bread, there are a growing number of artisan bakers, making good bread the traditional way. Of course this is more expensive than the stuff that passes for bread in the supermarkets.

Or &lt;strong&gt;make your own&lt;/strong&gt;. That way you know exactly what’s in it.

If you haven’t got a lot of time &lt;strong&gt;a bread machine is a great investment. &lt;/strong&gt;We’ve had one for years, and it’s worth its weight in gold. It takes five minutes to load and set the machine. Using the timer means we have a fresh loaf of organic bread when we get up in the morning.

Studies have shown that supplementing with vitamin C alone reduces the risk of heart disease by 50%. Taking vitamins A and E each reduce the risk by about a third. 

If you take all three of these essential nutrients you can reduce the risk to practically nil. 

So how much do you need?

&lt;strong&gt;Vitamin C: &lt;/strong&gt;
Take 2 to 6 grams a day of this most important of all nutrients. You can actually take a lot more without harm - vitamin C is the least toxic substance known to medicine, but for most people this is enough.

It is nearly impossible to get this much from your food, as fruits and vegetables don’t store vitamin C very well either. From the moment of picking, the quantity of vitamin C begins to decrease.

You’ll know if you’re having too much as you’ll get diarrhoea, which will stop as soon as you reduce the dose of vitamin C (The amount just below the amount that gives you diarrhoea is the bowel tolerance amount, and is sometimes used by nutritionists as a natural indicator of the best dose for each person)

&lt;strong&gt;Vitamin E: &lt;/strong&gt;
A good maintenance dose is 400 IU a day, but with an existing heart condition it may be better to take as much as 800 to 1000 IU. More than this is not a good idea. Like other fat-soluble vitamins, excess vitamin E is stored in your body and too much is harmful. 

&lt;strong&gt;Vitamin A: &lt;/strong&gt;
Vitamin A has two main forms. Retinal is the form found in animal foods, particularly liver. Carotenes are found in certain vegetables and are converted to retinal as needed.
For retinal supplementation, take between 1000 and 3000mcg.  This is another fat-soluble vitamin; so don’t take more than this.

Multi-vitamin supplements have some vitamin A either as retinal or carotene. Good food sources include carrots, watercress, cabbage, squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and broccoli. Eating plenty of these every day will also give you lots of other vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre.

&lt;strong&gt;For heart health&lt;/strong&gt;, supplement with &lt;strong&gt;vitamins C and E&lt;/strong&gt;, maybe a multi-vitamin as well, and eat lots of &lt;strong&gt;carotene rich vegetables. &lt;/strong&gt;

Don’t forget the importance of &lt;strong&gt;exercise&lt;/strong&gt; in keeping your heart fit.</description>

I’ve been doing some personal research on hot flashes in the last couple of years, and I’ve found two things that make a big difference.

 
(1) The more I work up a sweat from &lt;strong&gt;exercise&lt;/strong&gt;, the less I sweat from hot flashes. This applies both to how much and how often. 

(2) Any sort of &lt;strong&gt;stress&lt;/strong&gt; increases hot flashes (hot flushes). This includes physical, mental or emotional stress. Dehydration causes stress to your body, so that &lt;strong&gt;staying hydrated helps&lt;/strong&gt; reduce physical stress.  Sometimes you can cut short a hot flash if you have a drink of cold water as soon as you feel it coming on. Hot flashes generally start with a feeling of heat in your head, which then spreads downwards.

Exercise helps partly because it reduces stress. Vigorous exercise uses up adrenaline, the stress hormone, and produces endorphins, the ‘feel good’ hormones. 

What you eat has a big influence on hot flashes. Certain foods are known to trigger hot flashes, in particular hot spices, caffeine, alcohol and sugar – all things that put stress on your body. On the other hand, &lt;strong&gt;foods rich in alkalising minerals help&lt;/strong&gt; to reduce hot flashes. This includes most vegetables. Celery is particularly rich in minerals, as are sea vegetables (edible seaweeds).

Make sure you are getting enough vitamins as hot flashes deplete several of the most important ones – including vitamins C, B and E.</description>
