 A taste of something salty and sour can be an instant antidote to an excess of sweet and fatty foods. The best is Japanese umeboshi plum paste. This is very salty, very sour  the tiniest taste is sometimes enough to stop a headache in its tracks, when the headache is because of too much rich food. Any salty, sour food will help  olives are good  or just have a pinch of salt with a drop of lemon juice or vinegar. You only need a small taste.

Something Ive always found helpful after eating too much is a spoonful of live yoghurt. The good bacteria in the yoghurt help to digest the food, acting as reinforcements for the overworked bacteria in your gut.

If you often suffer from heartburn after a big meal, try to drink at least two large glasses of plain water in the half hour before eating. If you still have trouble, sip another glassful after the meal. Digestion uses a lot of water, and dehydration is the commonest cause of heartburn. 

If you&#39;re likely to have more alcohol than is good for you, remember to drink lots of water to keep hydrated, dilute the alcohol and help to flush it out of your system.</description>

    <description>I read recently that people with gum disease are four times as likely to develop heart disease as those without. The orthodox reaction to this is to say that gum disease must somehow cause heart disease  the germs get into the blood and weaken the heart muscles. 

There might be some truth in that, but when I studied Statistics we were taught that a strong correlation between two factors doesnt prove that one causes the other. There may be a third factor that causes both.

Isnt it much more likely that both gum disease and heart disease are caused by vitamin C deficiency? Ive explained before about the link between vitamin C and heart disease  a link that has been proved beyond doubt many times over. (Have a look at the work of Doctors Matthias Rath, Linus Pauling, James Enstrom and G.C. Willis.)

As for vitamin C and gum disease, arent inflammation and bleeding of gums the most obvious and well-known signs of scurvy? And everyone knows that scurvy is caused by lack of vitamin C.

Vitamin C supplements are my health insurance. By taking 2 or 3 grams of vitamin C every day, I plan to avoid heart disease and gum disease. I also dont get colds and rarely get any infections  a better side effect than most medicines offer!</description>

But many people are refusing the vaccine&lt;/strong&gt;  including a large proportion of health workers. In the U.K., only 10-20 of hospital staff say they will have the jab, &lt;strong&gt;doctors and nurses being among those refusing it. &lt;/strong&gt; In Australia, around a third of GPs wont have it, and another third arent sure yet.

The commonest reason given by doctors for refusing is that the vaccine hasnt been tested enough. Others say that the swine flu is so mild that its not worth vaccinating for.

Personally, I dont think any vaccine is worth having, and Im not alone. 

Any vaccine is a cocktail of highly toxic chemicals - used as preservatives or as adjuvants i.e. to stimulate an immune response. (Mercury is still a component of all vaccines except the controversial MMR jab, in spite of the clear link with autism.) Added to this are viruses, either live or dead, and tissue from the culture of the viruses. Viruses are cultivated in animal tissue, or even in tissue from human embryos! Some cells of this inevitably get into the vaccines. Vaccines are definitely not suitable for vegetarians!

&lt;strong&gt;Its far more important to develop a healthy immune system so that your body can deal with any illness that comes your way. &lt;/strong&gt;

Eat a healthy balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables. Get lots of fresh air and exercise. Get plenty of Vitamin C for general health and a strong immune system. 

Vitamin D is also very important. In fact, recent research suggests that vitamin D could be the deciding factor in whether or not you get flu. This would explain why flu is a winter illness, as vitamin D is made in the skin in response to sunlight. If you arent likely to see much sun in the next few months, cod liver oil is the traditional form of vitamin D supplement. (Nowadays its available in capsules for those who dont like the taste.)  Get out in the sunshine when you get the chance, whether its sitting in the park during your lunch break, or a long autumn walk on the weekend.</description>

My acupuncture teacher used to say that eating cold food in cold weather was a leading cause of illness. I think of his words whenever I see someone eating ice cream outdoors on a cold, cloudy day!

Ive said before how important it is to eat plenty of raw fruit and salad everyday. Cooking destroys many vital nutrients and digestive enzymes. On the other hand, some foods become more digestible when they are cooked. While raw food provides plenty of digestive enzymes, hot cooked food adds heat to your metabolism.

&lt;strong&gt;There are good arguments both for and against raw food. &lt;/strong&gt;

Theres a new book out  Catching Fire, by Richard Wrangham  that describes the authors theory that what makes humans different from animals is the ability to cook our food. He believes that we have evolved to eat cooked food. Our small mouths and short guts are adapted to digest food softened by cooking. Its a fascinating idea. 

Leslie and Susannah Kenton, authors of Raw Energy, advocate 70 raw, with the sensible advice to eat more hot food in winter. 

&lt;strong&gt;The right balance between cooked and raw depends on your individual metabolism - and on the weather. &lt;/strong&gt;

Always make vegetables the main part of your meals. In hot weather you can have most of them raw. The cold seasons are the time to enjoy hot soups, roast vegetables, and warming stews. In cold weather, we really need the warmth  and comfort  of hot food. Dont give up the salads, but have hot food as well.</description>

People assume over-the-counter analgesics are safe, but they all have unwanted side effects. The milder ones cause short-term effects such as diarrhoea or constipation, numbness and dizziness. Because these are obvious, people switch to different drugs. They dont realise the damage they do until its too late.

Some painkillers damage your stomach, others your kidney or liver. So what are you supposed to do when you have pain?

&lt;strong&gt;Pain is a warning sign that something is wrong&lt;/strong&gt;, like the red light on the dashboard of your car. Numbing the pain without looking at the cause is like disconnecting the red light on the dashboard. If you find out why youve got a pain, you can deal with the cause.

There are natural ways to ease pain. While they may not seem to be as effective as the chemical analgesics, none of them causes any damage to your body.

Heat and cold are the simplest of treatments  hot water bottles or ice packs, or alternate between them. What woman hasnt experienced the comfort of cuddling a hot water bottle at that time of the month? 

Chamomile tea is amazingly good at easing cramping, whether its a period pain or a digestive problem. It helps with tension that might be causing headaches.

Treatments such as osteopathy, chiropractic, massage and acupuncture all help relieve and correct pain caused by problems in joints and muscles. Acupuncture is so effective it has been used instead of anaesthetic during operations.

Hangovers are a common cause of headaches. This is mostly because of dehydration, so have at least three glasses of water and wait 20 minutes for your body to re-hydrate before resorting to a painkiller. Dont add to the burden your liver is already dealing with.

&lt;strong&gt;If you suffer long-term or frequent pain, deal with the cause.

Whatever it is, there is a natural way to restore your health, so that the pain goes away completely. &lt;/strong&gt;</description>

A wonderful example of the healing power of hugs comes from David Bresler, Ph.D., former director of UCLAs Pain Control Clinic. He instructed a woman suffering from recurring pain to receive four hugs a day from her husband. Her pain rapidly got better.

Virginia Satir, famous psychotherapist, said &lt;strong&gt; We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth. &lt;/strong&gt;

Best of all, hugging works both ways  it helps the hugger as well as the hugged.</description>

&lt;strong&gt;This is a blatant infringement of human rights. &lt;/strong&gt; Whatever anyone believes about cancer treatments, patients should be able to choose for themselves.

An expert said If alternative therapies really cured cancer, they&#39;d be standard treatment. This is the point. If the alternatives became standard, what would happen to the companies producing the chemicals for chemo- and radiotherapy? Theyd go bust.

This is the real reason the alternatives are still alternative. Not because they dont work (many of them do), not because they are dangerous (what could be more dangerous than radiotherapy or chemotherapy?), but because they are a threat to a very profitable business.

The big pharmaceutical companies have immense control over medical practises in many countries. They fund the research; they finance (through their paid adverts) the medical journals that publish the results of that research. This is why the alternative clinics have not published convincing evidence in medical journals for their treatments. This is why the American Cancer Society says, &#39;methods promoted in Mexican border clinics are not consistent with scientific understanding&#39; of cancer and its treatment.

If there were really freedom of choice and freedom of information, perhaps wed find out which treatments really work.</description>

This study was done a year before the recession started. Things are probably even worse now.

Much of this hardship could be avoided if people would only look after their health.

(Accidents arent avoidable, but the healthier you are the quicker youll recover.)

Most illness is a direct result of poor eating habits  a diet of TV dinners, junk food and fizzy drinks leads to health problems as surely as over-spending leads to financial problems.

Drink lots of water; eat proper food  lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, and wholegrains; exercise regularly. These are the key ingredients of natural health.

And none of them need cost the earth.

Tap water is a fraction the price of fizzy drinks, coffee, wine or beer, and far better for you. 

Buy fresh fruit and veg from a farm shop or farmers market and it wont be expensive. Even in the middle of cities there are markets, supplying fresh produce to hotels and restaurants.

You dont have to pay for gym membership to keep fit. There are many ways to exercise that are cheap or free  walking, running, cycling, dancing. There are lots of exercises you can do at home without expensive equipment.

&lt;strong&gt;If you are already ill, the natural way to get back your health is probably cheaper, and almost certainly more effective. &lt;/strong&gt;</description>

Sunbeds seem like an easy way to get a quick tan, but the radiation from a sunbed is very intense  up to 10 times stronger than natural sunlight. Studies have shown that regular use of sunbeds increases your risk of skin cancer many times. Even once a month increases your risk by half again. I think it wont be long before the link between sunbeds and skin cancer is as accepted as the link between smoking and lung cancer. Sunbeds also dramatically increase signs of aging.

There was a case recently of a young teenage girl using a coin operated tanning booth just for fun. With no adult there to guide her she stayed in for quarter of an hour. She ended up with third degree burns, and her doctors have advised her to stay out of the sun for the next ten years!

This is extreme of course, but remember even one use of a sunbed increases your risk of skin cancer, and definitely makes you look older sooner. Experts say never use a sunbed if you have fair or freckly skin, burn easily or have lots of moles.

Instead, get a tan naturally, in the sunshine. Build up a tan slowly, without burning. 
Make the most of sunny days in spring to start your tan.

The sunshine will also boost your vitamin D production (essential for calcium absorption and so makes for strong bones and teeth). It also stimulates your brain to produce seratonin  the feel good hormone.</description>
