Natural Heartburn Relief is the Simplest of all Remedies.

Natural heartburn relief can be found quickly and simply by drinking plain water. There is no better or more appropriate remedy than 2 or 3 glasses of clean water – and here’s why:

Heartburn has nothing to do with your heart. It is actually the pain you get when acid from your stomach comes up into your oesophagus. It is called heartburn because you feel the pain in your chest, near where your heart is.

Your stomach produces strong acid to digest foods. The stomach wall is protected from digesting itself with this acid by a layer of mucous on its inner surface. When the acid/food mixture passes on to your small intestine it’s a different story. Your small intestine protects itself by diluting and neutralizing the acid from the stomach. It does this with a watery bicarbonate solution. When you are dehydrated there is not enough water to do this.

Water is the Only Natural Heartburn Relief You need a lot of water to dilute the acid as food passes into the small intestine. If you haven’t got enough, rather than let your intestine be damaged by the strong acid, the valve at the bottom of your stomach closes tightly. Now there is nowhere for the food/acid mixture to go but back up – giving you heartburn.

Taking antacids might give you a little temporary relief, but in the long run it just encourages your stomach to make more acid to make up for it. Water is what your body needs, and only water will give you real, lasting heartburn relief.

To avoid heartburn, make sure you drink enough water every day. How much water to drink? - at least 6 to 8 glasses a day. If you eat very dry food, such as crisps or crackers, you will need more water. If you have a very big meal, again, you will need extra water to digest it comfortably.

Sometimes pregnant women suffer heartburn because of the womb pressing up against their stomach. In this case it's wise to avoid large meals as well as making sure to drink plenty of water. Dehydration is also a possible cause of morning sickness.

Remember, water is the only natural heartburn relief.
